About The Artist

A chef of many years, in lock down I started painting, which I enjoyed very much. I have also made stained glass windows and hay sculptures.

Being a chef is like a artist too. I am not in any art groups, I just do my own thing.

About The Artist

I have always been drawn to painting, but my interest in Art changed dramatically twenty years ago, when I became involved in the use of art therapy, working with young people with educational needs.

In 2013, I exhibited successfully for the first time and have continued to do so. I particularly enjoy showing my work in an environment where I am able to meet the public and discuss aspects of not only my work, but art in general.

My work captures the world around me, family, friends, nature, scenery – I love being able to put what I see and feel onto paper or canvas and watching a picture evolve.

Growing as an artist is very exciting. I love bold colours, and the natural world always inspires me. With this I mind, I’ve ventured into looser, abstract and mixed-media styles.

Art Group / Exhibitions

I am based in Maidenhead, Berkshire and exhibit locally.

Reading School Berkshire - Framed Mixed Media Art by Berkshire Artist Therese Lawlor

Reading School, Berkshire

Reading School can trace its roots back to the 12th Century when it was part of Reading Abbey, but the dissolution of the Abbey, the Great Plague and English Civil War led to the school’s eventual closure in the 19th Century. However, by 1867 it was announced that Reading School would be restarted but a new building was needed to house its students.

Fortunately, Alfred Waterhouse, a nationally eminent architect, happened to be living in Reading at that point and was commissioned to design the new school. He is considered to be one of the most important architects of the 19th Century.

Waterhouse designed hundreds of buildings across the UK including the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall.

The school opened in 1871 on its present site in Erleigh Road and is a Grammar School for boys, of some 880 pupils, which selects on the basis of examined ability, usually at age 11, with further entrants at 13 and 16.

About The Artist

Thérèse has lived in Reading for over 30 years and uses the town and her allotment as two of the inspirations for her work.

She develops paintings from sketches she makes on location and some of the scenes captured become greeting cards, with the history of the place on the back. Some of her work has represented Reading with its twin town of Dusseldorf and she has been commissioned to depict many local buildings for promotions or as presents. She is very happy to discuss commissions.

St. Laurence’s Churchyard, Reading

The church was built in 1121 by the Abbey for the people of Reading. It is steeped in history having been frequented by Queen Elizabeth I, who was even allotted a regular seat. During the English Civil War it was used as a temporary barracks by both sides of the conflict. Jane Austin worshipped here daily when she attended the school at the Abbey Gateway.

Sadly, considerable damage was done when two bombs were dropped nearby during World War II. The bombs also damaged the ornate façade of the building, occupied by Blandy and Blandy, solicitor. The solicitors are ranked as the 25th oldest law firm in the country and the offices were once the site of a leper house dating from the middle ages. (It was restored after the war and its lighted windows cast a warm glow on the graveyard in the painting).

Friar Street, Reading - Painting of Blandy and Blandy Solicitors - Berkshire Artist Thérèse Lawlor

Friar Street, Reading

At the start of Friar Street there is a special corner. Side by side sit the Victorian Town Hall, the modern offices of the solicitors, Blandy and Blandy and the 12th Century church of St Laurence.

The offices of Blandy and Blandy, one of the oldest solicitors in the country, is a building designed after the second world war, following a bomb attack on Reading on 10 February 1943. The bomb killed 41 people and injured 150 others. The devastation could have been a lot worse had it not been for the fact it was half-day closing and many shops were empty. Many of those killed had been in
The People’s Pantry, a restaurant just opposite the Town Hall.
